Postgraduate Opportunities

The Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory (PTCL) welcomes enquiries from suitable qualified graduates who wish to pursue a postgraduate degree. The following information is available:

(i) The research areas available in the Laboratory - both a Research Overview, with particular areas listed (Structure at Interfaces, Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, Spectroscopy and Molecular Structure, Photochemistry and Reaction Dynamics, Electrochemistry and Reactions at Interfaces and Solutions, and Biophysical Chemistry), and research pages of individual Research Groups are provided.

(ii) General information on Postgraduate Opportunities, including documents issued by the University Graduate Admissions Office.

The following course of action is recommended if you are interested in research in the PTCL:

First, look through the information given in (i) and (ii) and choose the area of interest to you. Second, write to the Director of Graduate Studies expressing your interest. We will pass the information directly on to those working in your chosen area(s).

There are many funding opportunities in the PTCL. These range from EPSRC and NERC Quota studentships, to Project Studentships, and Departmentally funded studentships. Eligibility requirements vary: for Quota studentships full funding (including fees and maintenance grant) can only be given to UK students, but other categories do not have that restriction. Please enquire from the Director of Graduate Studies about possibilities, and check the up-to-date availability on the postgraduate opportunities pages.

MSc in Theoretical Chemistry

The Department offers a one-year taught M.Sc. in Theoretical Chemistry at Oxford, which is designed to provide an introduction to the broad area of theoretical chemistry. Further details about this course, and about the admissions procedure, can be obtained here.
